How to set up a Various Artists release?

Releasing a project with five or more primary artists? This guide walks you through how to get it right.

2 min

A release featuring five or more primary artists must be classified as a “Various Artists” release to meet DSP requirements, for example, as with this ‘Call Me By Your Name’ soundtrack

Set up the release

You will need to create a new release the same way you normally set one up. You can find more information on how that works here. When selecting the primary artist for the release, enter “Various Artists.” You should not, and are not allowed to, add any other artists at the release level.

Then select “Set up a new profile for this artist.”

Add the tracks

Next, add tracks to your release. You’ll see that the “Use the same artists as the release” option is checked by default. You don’t need to, and are not allowed to, credit “Various Artists” at the track level. Simply uncheck this option and credit the appropriate artists for each track.

Deliver your release

Once you’ve filled in all the required metadata, you can deliver your release and it will be correctly published on the DSPs 🎉.

Please note that a “Various Artists” release will not appear under “Upcoming Releases” in your Spotify for Artists profile, so it won’t be possible to pitch it for editorial playlists.
